OVERVIEW OF A FAMILY OF FAITH

Religious Education at Saint John the Evangelist follows the direction of various Church documents to support parents in their role of passing on the Christian faith to their children.  We recognize that parents are the primary and principal educators of their children.  This year, we will be offering family catechesis using A Family of Faith Volume II:  The Sacraments by Sophia Institute Press. A Family of Faith program is for families with children in PreK (age 4) through 5th grades. We will be complimenting sacramental preparation for children in 2nd through 5th grades using the Augustine Institute’s Word of Life and Signs of Grace programs for children and FORMED.org for parents.

HOW A FAMILY OF FAITH WORKS

Parents will attend an Adult Meeting the first Sunday of each month where they will receive catechesis and guidance on the home lessons.  The last Sunday of the month is a Community Meeting that both parents and children will attend together.  Children in Pre-K through 5th grades and their parents will attend separate in-person classes the first, second, and third Sunday of the month with well-trained catechists and adult leaders to compliment, add, and reinforce what is being taught at home and in the classrooms.

Schedule

A Family of Faith will begin on Catechetical Sunday, September 17th from 2:30pm to 4:00pm in the Bread of Life Hall to receive materials, meet catechists, get more information, and answer questions.

SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION IS A TWO-YEAR PROCESS.

Children will prepare and receive First Reconciliation during the 2nd grade and receive both Confirmation and First Holy Communion during at the end of completing the 3rd grade.  If a child is older and is baptized, the child will prepare and receive First Reconciliation during their first year and will prepare and receive Confirmation and First Holy Communion the following year.
